Gateways on F1000Research

Openly and transparently publish all types of research output and maximize the value and reach of your research.

A personalized, customizable publishing hub to collate and showcase all your research in one searchable and shareable domain.

Sitting on the F1000Research platform, a Gateway offers an innovative, cost-effective and efficient publishing option for your researchers.

  • Showcase all research outputs from your organization including a range of article types (software tools, data notes, systematic reviews, and more) and non-peer-reviewed research (slides, posters, documents).
  • Enable your research to start attracting citations straight away and see it indexed in major indexers once it passes peer review.
  • Brand and customize your Gateway to your own look and feel, and add optional features such as links to your website, news, and the option to list all of your organisation’s research outputs, regardless of publication venue.
  • Support open research practices and provide metrics across your institution via a quarterly report.

Institutions setting up Gateways share a set of common goals: to remove unnecessary barriers and delays that their researchers face when sharing their research findings, and to ensure rapid and easy access to accelerate the use and potential impact of that research.

The University of Tsukuba and F1000 Research lead the way in Open Science with first open research publishing gateway to publish in Japanese

The University of Tsukuba has announced that it has signed a contract with F1000 Research Ltd to develop the first open research publishing gateway that will enable researchers to publish in either English or Japanese.

Not only will the publishing gateway make it simple for authors affiliated with the University of Tsukuba to publish any research or data they wish to share rapidly, openly and transparently, but it will also enable those studying the humanities and social sciences to choose whether to publish in English or in Japanese.

Benefits of a Gateway on F1000Research

Combine rapid publication with assured quality

See your researcher's work published in as few as 14 days followed by transparent, invited peer review. Our innovative open research publishing model combines the benefits of pre-printing (providing rapid publication with no editorial bias) with mechanisms to assure quality and transparency such as invited and open peer review, archiving, and indexing.

Be fully compliant with plan S and other funder mandates

Plan S requires that, from 2021, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms. Additionally, many funders now have open access mandates or policies. Everything published on an F1000Research Gateway is default CC-BY and Gold or Diamond open access (depending on your agreement with us), meaning it is fully compliant with even the strictest requirements.

Publish, cite and receive credit for the full range of research undertaken at your institution

F1000Research publishes a wide range of peer-reviewed articles, ensuring the visibility of non-traditional research types and offering appropriate credit to the researchers involved in doing this work.

All articles published on F1000Research are separate, citable items. A broad suite of industry-standard metrics are provided for all articles, including indicators of engagement and attention, views, downloads, and citations, helping to describe the use and reuse of the research being published and its potential value and impact.

Elevate the status and discoverability of your alternative research output

As well as giving you the ability to publish a wide range of peer-reviewed article types, a Gateway on F1000Research also enables you to publish non-peer-reviewed content. This includes research posters, slides and a variety of documents such as technical reports, policy guidelines, briefings, factsheets, impact reports and training materials.

All non-peer-reviewed content is:

  • Subject to editorial checks prior to publication
  • Published Open Access (default CC-BY)
  • Given a unique (DOI)
  • Provided with usage metrics – views, downloads, social shares
  • Published with commenting functionality to support engagement

Simplify the open publishing process for your researchers

Gateways are combined with an Institutional membership agreement, freeing your authors from article processing charges when publishing with F1000Research:

  • Support your researchers to publish open access by removing cost barriers to publication.
  • Control who publishes with strictly enforced author affiliate criteria.
  • Reduce administrative time and streamline payment processes with monthly billing.

Support for success

We provide communication and outreach support for your Gateway launch (including use of relevant social media channels). Once your Gateways is up and running your own dedicated F1000Research contact will provide reports on progress and offer guidance on the best ways to engage with your communities.

Customize and brand your Gateway to your own specification

Choose the colours, images and logo you want to use on your Gateway, and write your own introduction and explanatory text. Choose up to five classifications or thematic areas to be nested within your Gateway, helping to organise and sign-post your research eg. around conferences, specific labs or initiatives.

Additional customisations can include: Links to your external websites (for example your institution or relevant department homepages), image promotions (for example for events or promotions), and the option to list all of your organisation’s research outputs, regardless of publication venue.
