The Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) is one of the 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDG2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. The goal has eight targets and 14 indicators that measure the progress and challenges in achieving it.

Scientific research is essential for finding innovative and effective solutions to the complex and interrelated challenges of achieving the SDG2. Research can help to improve the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of agricultural systems, to enhance the quality and diversity of food and nutrition, to reduce food losses and waste, to promote inclusive and equitable food systems, and to inform policies and practices that support the SDG2. Research can also help to monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of the SDG2 interventions and to identify the gaps and opportunities for improvement.

To showcase the research efforts and challenges in addressing the SDG2, we have curated a collection of articles published in F1000Research that cover different aspects of the goal. The articles all contribute to the research around zero hunger, either by providing new insights, methods, data, or perspectives, or by highlighting the gaps, barriers, or trade-offs. The collection aims to inspire and inform researchers, policymakers, and the public about the current state of the art and the future directions of the SDG2 research.
