Introducing Policy Briefs to maximise the potential of evidence-based policy
Policy Briefs will now be published as stand-alone articles on F1000Research. Gearoid O Faolean, Publisher at F1000, introduces the new article type and its importance for bridging the gap between research and policy.
Previously Policy Briefs have been published alongside research articles, meaning they have not always achieved the prominence needed to help to implement change. Being hidden away, these valuable findings and recommendations could be overlooked, rather than reaching key stakeholders and being used to make informed decisions to drive change, whether this be for education, health or the environment.
Publishing with F1000Research enables researchers to gain the credit they deserve with the rapid dissemination of research. A Policy Brief is short, succinct, concise and should be no longer than 3000 words in length. Once submitted your Policy Brief will undergo open and transparent peer review, which promotes constructive feedback and open discussion.
Publish across a wide variety of disciplines such as those below:
- Psychology
- Public health
- Environment and agriculture
- Sociology
- Education
- Social issues
We would like to support you throughout the process and help you to join experts in your field by publishing cutting-edge research that can positively influence the future. Get in touch or take a look at our comprehensive website which has a detailed 'Preparing a Policy Brief' and 'About' section.

Introducing Policy Briefs to maximize the potential of evidence-based policy
“Policy briefs have no use, if they’re not freely accessible to a wide audience. They should convey and translate research results and conclusions to the practitioner community. An open access platform with transparent peer-review process, such as F1000Research, accomplishes this. Add to that a professional language and editing service and you have increased your chances of achieving the intended societal impact!”
-Ewert Aukes, Corresponding Author, Global resilience through knowledge-based cooperation: a new Protocol for Science Diplomacy [version 1; peer review: awaiting peer review]
